Through our owner-trained Medical Alert- and Service Dog program, we empower individuals with disabilities or life-threatening conditions to live more independent and fulfilling lives with the help of their assistance dogs.
TheraPaws™, our therapy dogs initiative, provides members of the public and their approved pet dogs an opportunity to add value to the lives of people in need of comfort and emotional care.
…detect changes in their handler’s blood sugar levels, neurochemical levels and behaviour and alert them to avoid potential medical emergencies;
…provide support for people with physical disabilities by helping with tasks like opening doors, retrieving dropped items, or offering stability during walking
These dogs assist in clinical settings, helping to ease patient anxiety or stress during medical or therapeutic sessions
Puppies are introduced to basic obedience training, house manners, and socialization with various people, environments, and sounds. This stage lays the foundation for a calm, confident, and adaptable service dog.
The dog learns essential commands – the goal here is to build discipline and responsiveness to verbal and non-verbal cues.
The focus shifts to teaching specialized tasks based on the service dog’s intended role. For example: Recognizing and alerting to allergens; assisting with balance or retrieving items; responding to specific sounds; dogs are also trained to remain calm in high-stress environments, such as crowded areas or noisy streets.
Service dogs learn to behave appropriately in public settings, such as restaurants, shopping centres, and on public transport; they are trained to ignore distractions and focus solely on their handler.
The handler and the dog undergoes additional training to meet the specific needs and routines of the team – this stage fosters a strong bond and ensures the dog is equipped to perform tasks tailored to their handler.
The dog undergoes rigorous evaluation to ensure they can consistently perform their tasks and maintain excellent behaviour in all scenarios. Successful completion leads to the service dog’s official qualification and readiness for their role.
Even after qualification, service dogs require periodic training to maintain their skills and adapt to their handler’s evolving needs.
Each stage is essential to the successful training of a well-mannered and highly skilled service dog, capable of providing both practical and emotional support.
